UP issues 2022 'Building America' report

Union Pacific Railroad yesterday released the "2022 Building America Report," which highlights the Class I's progress on sustainability, safety and service goals.
Highlights included:
- a 21% decline in total derailments compared to 2019 and 1.5 million hours of training for UP's workforce;
- a $1.9 billion investment in infrastructure to create more reliable and consistent service, including the installation of 4 million new ties and the replacement, resurfacing and expansion of more than 20,000 track miles; and
- a $24.1 million community investment directed to 2,500 nonprofit organizations.
Also in 2022, the railroad implemented a new qualitative cybersecurity risk-management process to ensure protection from cyber events, UP officials said in a press release.
"This report highlights our progress to achieve the goals outlined in our Building a Sustainable Future 2030 strategy and follows through on our commitment to transparent communication," said Chairman, President and CEO Lance Fritz. "Placing our stakeholders at the center of our decision making helps us find the best solutions, enables our customers to get their jobs done and supports and connects the communities where our employees live and work."
The railroad has published the report annually since 2015.
