Union Pacific Railroad recently launched a $39.5 million infrastructure improvement project between Clarks and Schuyler, Neb.Scheduled to be completed in mid-July, the project calls for replacing 115,000 concrete ties, renewing surfaces at 15 grade crossings, and installing 15 switches and nearly 44 miles of new rail. UP is using a modern track renewal train, which can install rail and concrete ties in one pass, to complete the project. The track upgrade is one of nearly 1,500 such projects the Class I plans to complete along its 32,000-mile network this year, aimed at improving operating efficiency, reducing motorist wait times at crossings and improving safety.
