Rail News: Union Pacific Railroad
On Aug. 27, Union Pacific Railroad will officially open Global III, a 1,200-acre intermodal facility designed to increase the railroad's Chicago-area container-handling capacity.
Located in Rochelle, Ill., off Interstate-88 — about 80 miles west of Chicago — the $181 million facility initially will handle 1,000 containers per day, eventually expanding to 3,000 containers per day.
Construction on the facility began in November 2001 and concluded in July.
UP needs the new facility to keep up with regional and international business growth, officials said in a prepared statement. The railroad also operates Chicago intermodal terminals Global I and II.
