The National Business Group on Health (NBGH) recently named Union Pacific Railroad one of the 2011 Best Employers for Healthy Lifestyles. The Class I achieved “platinum status” for the award for the fifth-straight year, and is the only railroad or transportation provider to receive the honor, according to UP.
Created in 2005, the awards honor employers that try to improve their workers’ health, productivity and quality of life.
The Class I offers Union Pacific Wellness, a health promotion initiative that encourages employees to lead a healthy lifestyle. The program assesses and provides intervention support for health risk factors such as asthma, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, depression, diabetes, fatigue, inactivity, nutrition, smoking, stress and weight.
UP provides risk identification and reduction programs that consist of wellness assessments and biometric screenings, lifestyle management, tobacco cessation, system health facilities, education programs, research grants and injury prevention.
