Yesterday, Union Pacific Railroad published its second annual sustainability and citizenship report, which highlights the Class I’s ongoing efforts to improve environmental stewardship, safety, employee training and development, and corporate governance.

The report shows the railroad has set a fuel consumption rate reduction goal of 1 percent annually from 2011 to 2015, as measured by gross-ton miles, and that attaining the goal would represent a 23 percent fuel-efficiency improvement since 2000. The report also states that, compared with 2009, UP last year reduced its greenhouse-gas emissions rate from locomotives by 3 percent on a gross-ton mile basis and improved fuel efficiency by 3 percent, saving more than 27 million gallons of diesel.

In addition, the railroad in 2010 recorded its safest-ever year with a 1.37 reportable injury rate, a 6 percentage-point improvement from 2009; donated more than $14 million and supported more than 2,500 nonprofits through the Union Pacific Foundation, matching gifts and corporate contributions; and earned an all-time best customer satisfaction score.

“We continuously strive to improve the ways we protect the environment, serve as an employer of choice, provide great customer service and deliver shareholder results,” said Robert Turner, UP senior vice president of corporate relations, in a prepared statement.
