UP sets annual injury rate record in 2010

Last year, Union Pacific Railroad's employee reportable injury rate dropped to 1.37, a 6 percent improvement from the previous best annual rate of 1.45 established in 2009.
The rate is calculated according to the number of injuries per 200,000 manhours, which is equivalent to the number of hours worked by 100 full-time employees in a given year.
“Employees being more aware of risk, improving and standardizing best practices, and embracing ‘Total Safety Culture’ were key factors in our 2010 performance," said Bob Grimaila, UP’s vice president of safety, security and environment, in a prepared statement.
