Rail News: Union Pacific Railroad
The Association of American Railroads (AAR) recently presented the John H. Chafee Award for Environmental Excellence to Union Pacific Railroad locomotive facility manager Tom Franklin.
The association honored Franklin for resolving a number of environmental issues at UP’s North Little Rock, Ark., locomotive shop. He replaced defective locomotive fueling equipment, and developed regulators that prevent fuel spills from automatic shut-off equipment and an environmentally safe storage mechanism for locomotive toilet chemicals.
Franklin also created a color-coded "Know Your Drains" program to ensure proper disposal of hazardous materials and an oil recycling program for employees to discard personally used motor oils.
The Chafee Award is named after U.S. Sen. Lincoln Chafee's (R-RI) late father, who promoted the environmental advantages of rail transportation. The award recognizes an individual railroad employee who has demonstrated outstanding environmental awareness and responsibility.
The other award nominees were:
• Sam Hill, Amtrak director of procurement;
• Kimberly Kitchen, manager of an Ohio Terminal coal transloading facility owned by Norfolk Southern Corp.;
• Elaine Lepage, business analyst in Canadian Pacific Railway’s damage prevention and claims services department;
• Martha Rochelle, BNSF Railway Co. mechanical department laborer foreman; and
• Paul Watson, CSX Transportation manager of locomotive training.
