Last month, Union Pacific Railroad loaded 940 coal trains in the Southern Powder River Basin (SPRB) compared with 916 trains in April 2010. The Class I met 97 percent of National Coal Transportation Association (NCTA) demand, according to a weekly coal loading performance report.

In April, UP logged 120 missed SPRB loading opportunities, 89 of which were attributable to slow unloading at utility plants, 17 to the railroad and 14 to mines. However, missed loadings were partially offset by 100 extra loadings, UP said.

In the Colorado/Utah Region, the railroad loaded 201 coal trains in April vs. 229 in April 2010, meeting 95 percent of NCTA demand.

“Some mines in Colorado/Utah continue to experience production and geology issues,” UP officials said in the weekly report.
