In January, Union Pacific Railroad loaded 1,056 coal trains in the southern Powder River Basin (SPRB) compared with 975 trains in January 2010.
For the month, the railroad registered 111 missed SPRB loading opportunities of which 71 were attributable to slow unloading at utility plants, 25 to mines and 15 to UP. However, missed loadings were offset by 122 extra loadings, UP officials said in a weekly coal loading performance report.
The report also shows that a coal train derailed 49 loads near Gasconade, Mo., on Feb. 5, blocking both main tracks. But the tracks were returned to service on Feb. 7, UP said.
In the Colorado/Utah region, January coal train loadings totaled 231 compared with 229 in January 2010.
