Union Pacific Railroad yesterday announced it will provide a new consumer goods intermodal service from Port Houston’s Barbours Cut Container Terminal to Denver, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles and Oakland, California, and El Paso, Texas.
The service will enable the direct loading of intermodal containers onto rail cars and eliminate the need for the containers to be trucked about 30 miles from the port to the nearest rail facility, UP officials said in a press release.
"Union Pacific is always looking for ways to save our customers time, while providing them more options and greater ease to our rail network,” said Kari Kirchhoefer, UP senior vice president-premium, marketing and sales. “The new on-dock terminal service provides additional routing options to key metropolitan markets, while helping customers enhance their efficiency.”
Port Houston is the largest intermodal container port on the U.S. Gulf Coast, handling 73% of all container traffic in the region, UP officials said. It is served by the Port Terminal Railroad Association, which consists of the port authority, Houston Belt & Terminal Railway, UP, BNSF Railway Co. and Canadian Pacific Kansas City.
