Union Pacific Railroad is building an intermodal terminal on existing UP property west of downtown Kansas City, Missouri.

Construction is underway on the terminal, which will serve domestic and international containerized shipments of grains, consumer goods, refrigerated products and pet foods, UP officials announced Oct. 17.

Expected to open in mid-2025, the facility will be the fourth intermodal ramp that UP has built in the past few years. The Kansas City intermodal terminal (KCIT) will help convert more truck traffic to rail, reduce congestion on highways, and help to lower greenhouse gas emissions, UP officials said in the railroad's "Inside Track" blog.

The terminal will feature UP-developed technology that scans a driver's equipment and speeds up the gating process, allowing truckers to quickly enter and exit the ramp, UP officials said.

"KCIT will offer shippers convenient and cost-effective access to our 32,000-mile network, with the ability to reach Mexico, Canada and overseas markets,” said Kenny Rocker, UP's executive vice president of marketing and sales.
