Union Pacific wins GM supplier award, upgrades Kansas line

Union Pacific Railroad recently received the 2012 General Motors Supplier of the Year Award, the eighth time the automaker has bestowed the honor to the Class I.

The railroad was one of 83 suppliers recognized by GM for exceeding expectations by being innovative, delivering quality products and services on time, and providing outstanding value, UP officials said in a press release.

"We are devoted to providing customers unparalleled service, and this recognition highlights that commitment," said Linda Brandl, UP's vice president and general manager of automotive. "Our industry-leading franchise that includes an extensive network, facilities and equipment is positioned to create customer value and continued success."

GM bestows the award to less than 1 percent of its 18,500 suppliers worldwide. Winners are chosen by a global team of GM purchasing, engineering, quality, manufacturing and logistics executives.

Meanwhile, UP is completing a $19 million upgrade to its line running from Salina to near Oakley, Kan.

The project began April 11 and is scheduled for completion by July's end. Crews will replace 133,700 ties and more than one-quarter mile of rail in various curves, install more than 63,700 tons of ballast and renew surfaces at 174 grade crossings.

The project is one of nearly 1,500 UP plans to complete this year across its 32,000-mile network.
