Last month, Union Pacific Railroad loaded 820 coal trains in the Southern Powder River Basin compared with 982 trains in June 2011.
In the Colorado/Utah Region, the Class I loaded 225 coal trains versus 209 in the year-ago period.
On June 27, 22 coal cars derailed near Junction City, Kan., in the Salina Subdivision, an eastbound route for UP’s Colorado coal trains. Some trains were detoured via North Platte, Neb., and the derailment was cleared and track re-opened on June 29, according to UP’s weekly coal loading performance report.
