In the past 20 years, European Union (EU) railways have been progressively transformed through privatization, especially in terms of freight services, and through franchising of passenger services. Also evolving is the procurement process, as railways no longer automatically buy from national equipment suppliers. Along with the development of large single markets both for railway services and for the railway supply industry, the EU is seeing significant growth in the market share of new entrants in freight, leading to a growth in EU rail traffic overall.
