Woman of Influence in Rail

Elisabeth Klawunn

Manager, engineering & construction maintenance
Delaware River Port Authority/PATCO

Job description: Elisabeth oversees PATCO's capital construction program. A licensed professional engineer in New Jersey, Elisabeth has over 16 years of civil and structural engineering expertise. In addition to her managerial role, Elisabeth serves as bridge engineer for the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, a vital and iconic Philadelphia landmark supporting vehicular, train and pedestrian travel. Among notable projects she has led are the $195 million project to rehabilitate the Benjamin Franklin Bridge suspension spans and anchorages, and the $31.5 million project to install elevators in PATCO stations.

Why she's influential as a mentor: Elisabeth is a dedicated leader and mentor who has made a lasting impact both at PATCO and across the rail industry. What sets Elisabeth apart is not just her professional achievements, but her dedication to mentorship and creating opportunities for others. She is involved in DRPA/PATCO's Youth Exploration Program. A DRPA/PATCO initiative, the program introduces middle and high school students to the worlds of transportation, engineering and safety through hands-on STEM activities, site visits and presentations by industry experts. Through this program, she helps young people discover new possibilities and inspires them to think about careers they might not have considered before.

She also is a mentor in the Women's Transportation Seminar YOU program, which encourages young people to pursue careers in transportation; and she mentors emerging leaders, particularly women, as they navigate their careers in transportation.

Whether she's leading a project to make PATCO more accessible or mentoring young professionals, Elisabeth demonstrates what it means to lead with empathy, purpose, and a focus on inclusivity.
