Woman of Influence in Rail

Sapna Shah

Senior director, enterprise asset management
MTA Metro-North Railroad

Job description: Sapna has been Metro-North Railroad's (MNR) senior director of enterprise asset management (EAM) since December 2022. She is responsible for deploying and maintaining an EAM system that impacts nearly 6,000 personnel.

Why she's influential in technology: Over the past year, Sapna has taken a stalled EAM program at MNR and turned it into an industry-leading, world-class initiative. Prior to her leadership, the EAM program was plagued by delays and little measurable progress. Once she arrived on the scene, Sapna established a comprehensive five-year plan, setting clear objectives and measurable goals that included a defined return on investment. Her strategic vision and determination led to securing limited funding and forming a capable team by the end of 2023, enabling the program to achieve an ambitious timeline in 2024.

Under her leadership, nearly 40 MNR employees and support personnel collaborated to implement a digital EAM system across multiple departments. Her team delivered field-based EAM solutions for track, signals, communications and rolling stock maintenance, equipping MNR personnel with the tools to document and collect key data. The results were transformative: Sapna's efforts directly contributed to a record-breaking, on-time performance rate of 98.3% for MNR in 2024, alongside outstanding achievements in rolling stock and right-of-way asset performance.
