Today, Bombardier Inc. released financial results for the third quarter, which ended Oct. 31, showing Bombardier Transportation posted revenue of $1.5 billion, a $400 million decrease compared with third-quarter 2004.

The division also recorded earnings before interest and tax of $39 million and order backlog of $20.6 billion.

The transportation unit’s third-quarter orders totaled $2.1 billion, a 130 percent increase compared with the same 2004 period. Major contracts included MTA Metro-North and Long Island railroads’ $425 million order for 194 electrical multiple unit (EMU) cars; Austrian Federal Railways’ $223 million order for 240 Talent EMUs; and New Jersey Transit’s $206 million order for 131 multi-level commuter cars.

In addition, Bombardier Transportation continued to reorganize. Since March 2004, the division has cut its workforce by 5,500 positions. Last month, the company closed its Wakefield, U.K., manufacturing plant; two more plants are expected to close in the fourth quarter.
