American Railcar Industries Inc. (ARI) had a banner second quarter, setting new revenue and rail-car delivery records.

Revenue jumped 38 percent to $209 million and deliveries rose 31 percent to 2,268 cars compared with second-quarter 2006. The company shipped more tank cars — primarily because a Marmaduke, Ark., tank-car plant has fully recovered from severe tornado damage that occurred in April 2006 — but delivered fewer covered hoppers.

“Our tank car lines are fully booked through 2008 and we have orders into 2009,” said ARI President and Chief Executive Officer James Unger in a prepared statement, adding that the company is pursuing opportunities to fill available production capacity for covered hoppers.

As of June 30, ARI’s backlog stood at 14,043 cars compared with 16,473 units on Dec. 31, 2006, and 12,790 cars on June 30, 2006.

Through 2007’s first six months, revenue totaled $396.3 million, a 20 percent increase compared with the same 2006 period. The company delivered 4,189 cars vs. 3,714 units last year.

ARI builds tank cars and covered hoppers, repairs and refurbishes rail cars, produces rail-car components and provides fleet management services.
